Grade 8 Modern Method of Vegetable Protection from Diseases and pest

The pests and diseases are biggest obstacle in vegetable production because they are the key component of natural environment and they can be found in any kind of vegetable plants. Their main food are also vegetable plants so they damage and destroy it in order to eat and grow. Due to this, farmer has to face big losses.

Modern methods of Vegetable protection from diseases and pests:
1. Resistant varieties : planting vegetable that shows a strong natural resistance to pest and diseases.
2. Cutting of infected part
3. Companion planting : growing certain plants to protect the concerned plants.
4. Natural pesticides : Garlic, chilies, marigolds, neem etc
5. Use of chemicals

IPM : Integrated Pest Management:
It is an ecosystem based method that focus on long term prevention of pests and their damages to vegetables. It uses a combination of three major approaches namely:
1. Mechanical Approach: barriers
2. Biological approach: enemy of pest
3. Chemical Approach: pesticide derived from natural substances.

The theoretical and practical aspects associated with IPM:
i. Growing of Healthy vegetable plants:
                      Using high quality seed, providing natural manure, pollution free environment.
ii. Regular Monitoring of vegetable plants:
                      Daily Watering, irrigation, providing organic manure etc.
iii. Protection of Friendly Pests:
                     Identifying and protecting to natural enemy of pests.
iv. Train Farmer and Make them Competent:
                      making farmer to act as per circumstances that has long lasting positive impact in vegetable farming.
